Bacteriostatic Water

Also known as: Bac Water, BAC Water, 0.9% Benzyl Alcohol Water

Bacteriostatic water is sterile water mixed with 0.9% benzyl alcohol, which prevents bacterial growth in multi-dose vials. It is the standard diluent used to reconstitute lyophilized (powdered) peptides for subcutaneous or intramuscular injection. Without bacteriostatic water, reconstituted peptides would only be safe to use for hours rather than weeks.

Half-Life

N/A (carrier solution)

Common Dose

1–5 mL depending on peptide and desired concentration

Route

Drawn into syringe and slowly injected into peptide vial

Frequency

Used as needed for peptide reconstitution

Mechanism of Action

The benzyl alcohol acts as a bacteriostatic agent — it does not kill bacteria but inhibits their growth, allowing the same vial of reconstituted peptide to be safely accessed multiple times over 28+ days when refrigerated. The water itself serves as a sterile, pH-balanced carrier for the peptide.

Reported Benefits

  • Required to reconstitute powdered peptides for injection
  • Allows multi-use of a single peptide vial (28+ days)
  • Sterile and pH-balanced
  • Prevents bacterial contamination during repeated draws
  • Standard medical-grade diluent

Side Effects

  • !Not for use in newborns or infants (benzyl alcohol risk)
  • !Rare allergic reaction to benzyl alcohol
  • !Generally safe when used as directed

Dosage Protocol

Common dose1–5 mL depending on peptide and desired concentration
RangeMost peptides reconstitute with 1–3 mL
FrequencyUsed as needed for peptide reconstitution
AdministrationDrawn into syringe and slowly injected into peptide vial

Notes

Slowly add bac water down the side of the peptide vial — do not spray directly onto the lyophilized powder. Gently swirl (do not shake) until fully dissolved. Once reconstituted, refrigerate the vial and use within 28–30 days.

Research Status

Standard medical supply, used worldwide for injectable medications.

Contraindications

  • Do not use in newborns or infants
  • Known benzyl alcohol allergy

Storage

Room temperature before opening. Refrigerate after first use; replace per manufacturer expiration.

Legal Status

Available with prescription or from research supply companies. Widely used and legally available.
