SS-31 (Elamipretide) is a mitochondria-targeted peptide that selectively binds to cardiolipin on the inner mitochondrial membrane. It restores mitochondrial function, reduces oxidative stress, and protects against mitochondrial dysfunction — a key driver of aging and many chronic diseases. Mechanism of Action
SS-31 binds cardiolipin, a phospholipid unique to the inner mitochondrial membrane that is essential for electron transport chain function. It stabilizes cardiolipin, restores efficient ATP production, reduces reactive oxygen species (ROS), and prevents cytochrome-c release (a trigger of apoptosis). This makes failing mitochondria function more like young, healthy ones.
